Orchard Grass

Dactylis glomerata   Orchardgrass Variety Chart
Orchardgrass is valuable on light textured soils due to its outstanding drought-tolerance. Most varieties have good winter-hardiness, although few varieties have superior winter-hardiness. The species is rather slow to establish but persistency is good under hay, silage, and proper grazing management. After it starts growing in the spring, orchardgrass tends to head very quickly. Late heading varieties therefore can provide more flexibility in management options. Late maturing orchardgrass is also popular as a companion grass for alfalfa.

Barlemas

Barlemas

Barlemas is a late-maturing, highly palatable orchardgrass. Barlemas produces a dense, leafy sward without the clumps of traditional orchardgrass. Barlemas is more winter-active which equates to earlier production in spring and later production in fall with proper placement. However, it lacks winterhardiness of less winter-active varieties such as Baridana. Barlemas is an excellent choice for the transition zone and milder areas in the lower midwest and northeast. Barlemas is drought tolerant and produces forage later into the summer. Barlemas exhibits exceptional rust resistance. It is well-suited for grazing and hay production.
