Research and development
The grass seed sector is innovating and inspiring. The products that are developed are essential for human welfare, covering aspects such as food, recreation and the natural environment.
Research & Development has guided the company for more than 100 years

Research and Development is one of the most
important priorities for the Royal Barenbrug Group, in which creativity
is regarded as the lifeblood of the future. The development of new
varieties is a lengthy process that demands considerable interaction
with the scientific world and with the users of the grasses. The
working environment is extremely professional, dynamic and diverse,
varying from laboratories to experimental fields and test locations at
home and abroad.
Teamwork
An international team of breeders
is active in a series of R&D programmes. The work is characterized
by a high level of independence and individual responsibility.
Creativity, persistence and result-orientation are the most important
qualities of our researchers. The breeding of grasses at Barenbrug is
carried out at 10 locations throughout the world, from Finland to
Australia, covering the main climate areas. The mutual exchange of
knowledge, results and propagation material between colleagues is
exciting and inspiring for all members of the group.
Innovative
Barenbrug develops grass
strains and varieties with unique properties, such as resistance to
specific diseases, salt and shade tolerance, slow growth for less
frequent mowing and fast recovery capacity for intensive use, such as
football pitches. The range of characteristics and uses is extremely
wide. The research not only covers grasses for playing fields, golf
courses and the public green sector, but also innovative grasses for
dairy farming all over the world. An example of market-orientated
innovation is the research into the influence of specific grass
varieties on the prevention of cardiovascular disease via the food
chain: grass - cow - milk - dairy products - human consumption.
Self-development
and initiative are keywords for the breeders and researchers at
Barenbrug. 'No creation without risk' is an important maxim. In short:
working for Barenbrug Reseach is working towards the future.
