The solution that grass species offer for global problems, both now and in the future, is greater than you might think. The right genetics and the right technology allow us to make a significant contribution to improving public health in general, through the best dairy and meat products and reductions in global CO2 emissions. More directly, we improve farmers’ productivity by reducing the consumption of water, fertilizers and pesticides. This is our contribution to a better world for the generations that will follow us.
Using the available agricultural land and our scarce resources responsibly requires greater efficiency in meat and dairy production. Innovation is a major driving force for Barenbrug, as can be seen from the improvements that we are continuously introducing.
Grasses that need fewer resources to grow, cutting down on the consumption of scarce and precious water. For example, Barenbrug's GreenEarth quality label helps green space managers to achieve a more sustainable use and management of grass. Through extensive research and many years of expertise, Barenbrug knows better than anyone else which cultivars and mixtures can make an even bigger contribution to the sustainable use and management of grass in terms of reduced use of water, fertilisers, pesticides and mowing. We are continuously improving our grass varieties, so that they can contribute to the health and productivity of grazing cattle, sheep, horses and other livestock. An example is the NutriFibre technology; the required effective fibre and high feed value combined in a single product, to harvest large quantities of forage with sufficient energy for highly productive dairy cattle. Besides, this forage is rich in protein, resulting in a high concentration of protein in the milk. Barenbrug uses the benefits of its Nutrifibre technology in its grass mixtures. We apply new genetics and new technologies, making our grasses more resistant to diseases and better able to withstand very low or very high temperatures. For example, overseeding used to be impossible in ‘cold season’ climates. But SOS has changed that. SOS will germinate and rapidly establish at temperatures as low as 6°C! So once a pitch has been overseeded it will recover very quickly, even at these low temperatures, and the playing season can be extended with extra playing hours. Coating certain seeds allows for accelerated germination and initial growth of the young grass plants. Our technology is applied at eight coating plants throughout the world. Yellow Jacket - Rhizobium coating is Barenbrug’s enhanced seed coating for lucerne. Using new technology, high levels of effective Rhizobia are embedded in a protective polymer matrix. Together with a nutrient booster containing all essential minerals and trace elements, this product is designed to improve establishment and increase forage production. Think global, act local
The Barenbrug R&D organization is decentralized with 15 locations on 6 continents in the main climate regions of the planet. This strategy provides knowledge and innovative products for local applications and climate conditions. In addition, this organization is supplemented by an international network of collaborations and strategic alliances with leading universities, research institutes and partner companies. These partnerships enable us to get the best out of plant genetics and seed technologies.
